I don’t know about you, but when I first heard the term “vehicle monitoring device” I instantly thought of that breathalyzer device that my best friend from college had to get installed in his pickup truck. This could not be further from the case.
Many auto insurance companies are now using a plug in device technology known as telematics to monitor your driving habits. Key elements that are monitored are distance driven, speed, and braking force applied. Not to mention, these devices can also track the time of day driven (Hallelujah parents of teenage drivers).
Progressive Insurance was the first in its class to utilize this technology with many other carriers such as Allstate and Safeco Insurance following suit. In fact, ABI Research predicts that usage of these tracking devices could exceed 107 million by 2018.
So, why all the fuss over these over these nosey little plug ins?
- You can save money! Many auto insurance carriers will give you as much as a 5% discount just for agreeing to utilize the technology. If you good get a good report card after 90 days of monitoring, this 5% can easily turn to 15%!
- You learn your own driving patterns. Do I really drive that fast on the interstate? Did I really have 3 hard brake checks last month? Oh yeah, that’s the day that the kids were fighting in the backseat on the way to school (oh wait that could’ve been any day…you get the point)?
Bottom line is these devices are gaining extreme popularity, especially with the Generation X & Millennial Generations and can be very beneficial to you and your insurance rates.
